BFAR derives its mandate from Republic Act No. 8550 (The Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998), as amended by Republic Act No. 10654, which mandates the Bureau to conserve, protect, manage, develop, and properly utilize the country's fisheries and aquatic resources and ensure their sustainable development.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), under the Department of Agriculture, conserves, manages, and ensures the sustainable use of fisheries and aquatic genetic resources. It regulates access to these resources in accordance with national laws and policies.
